President John Dramani Mahama

  • Outrageous! – John Mahama accuses government of lying to individual bondholders

Former President John Dramani Mahama has taken a swipe at the government for “lying” to bondholders.

According to him, the government lied to individual bondholders when it announced the debt exchange program and assured that individual bondholders were exempted from the programme.

But on December 24, 2022, the government said individual bondholders will be affected by the programme.

This has faced huge opposition as they have rejected the proposal and the invitation by the government.

John Mahama also stated that the government has badly managed the economy, while pushing more Ghanaians into poverty.

“Outrageous! Gov’t lies to individual bondholders; forces a haircut, and plunging more people into poverty! An absolute failure in managing our economy,” he said in a tweet sighted by GhanaWeb Business.

Meanwhile, the acceptance of the invitation by the government is crucial to the success of the debt exchange programme as the individual bondholders hold about GH¢8 billion of government bonds.

Analysts have also stated that a failure of the programme will pose great financial threats to Ghana’s economy.

This may also affect the country’s chances of securing financial support from the International Monetary Fund.

Financial Analyst, Joe Jackson said “If we don’t get this debt exchange programme through then we will not be able to achieve our debt sustainability, then the IMF programme will either be delayed or may even be at risk.

“Up until now, the markets have been treating us kindly because everybody’s assumption is that somewhere in February or March IMF is coming through. If we don’t achieve our debt right, if we have to stress them again then IMF will not come when it is due or back off and then, the chaotic debt reforms we are trying to prevent will now happen with all the dark consequences of not being able to access any funds anywhere,” he is quoted by 3news.com.

  • Mahama is sponsoring Appiah Stadium to attack Rawlings – Kankam

The Editor-In-Chief of the Informer Newspaper Andy Kankam, has dared former President John Dramani, that if he is not behind what Appiah Stadium a sympathizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is doing he [Mahama] should issue a statement by close of day today [Monday] to disown him.

The maverick sympathizer of the NDC has reportedly described former President JJ Rawlings as an immature politician for suggesting that the NDC would not be able to win the 2020 polls if they fail to purge themselves.

Former President Rawlings in a recent interview with TV3 said he would wish the NDC captures power in 2020 but questioned the readiness of the party. ‘’Let me simply say, that I will very much want to see the NPP beaten but do we have what it takes? Do we have the capacity to be able to wrestle power from them,’’ he questioned.

Mr. Rawlings was clarifying a widely reported story that captured him saying that it will be difficult for the NDC to regain power. The former president clarifying the statement said if the NDC would win power in 2020, there are a lot of issues it must address indicating that the party has lost its moral grounds.

The comments did not go down well with some individuals including a diehard supporter of the NDC Appiah Stadium, who has lambasted the former president and described him as a an immature politician.

But responding to the issue on Rainbow Radio Andy Kankam slammed Appiah Stadium, described him as a nobody and accused him of doing Mahama’s bidding.

According to him, former President Mahama is sponsoring Appiah Stadium to attack the founder of the NDC. ‘’When I Andy Kankam was beaten by former President Kufour’s bodyguard in the full glare of the late Mills where was Appiah Stadium? ‘’…so today it was an opportunity for former President Mahama to become president and so Appiah Stadium is a fan.

I am daring former President John Dramani Mahama that if he is not behind what Appiah Stadium is saying; insulting Rawlings, he should immediately by close of day issue a statement to disown Appiah Stadium for insulting former the founder of the party that he is politically immature,’’ he said.

The attacks by Appiah Stadium he noted has vindicated Mr. Rawlings’ call on the party to purge itself and restore its integrity because it has lost touch with the grass root.

Andy Kankam insisted that Appiah Stadium is doing ‘’this to please Mr. Mahama and so he must come out to disassociate Appiah Stadium’s comments…If he [Mahama] fail to do so, then people are watching. People will decide for themselves. What the founder has said is simple.

Who did not know it? We all knew how our grass root was disrespected…So this is what the party’s founder is saying. The arrogance and disrespect for party structures must stop,’’ he noted.

  • Mahama must be cautious not to fail again — NDC member

A member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashanti Region, Alhaji Nuhu Alhassan Dicko, has urged former President John Dramani Mahama to be cautious not to fail again.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic in an interview in Kumasi, Alhaji Dicko recalled that with a few months to the 2012 elections when the then President and Presidential Candidate of the NDC, John Evans Atta Mills, died, Mahama led the NDC to win the presidential election.

However, he said, with the support base of the party and by dint of hard work, Mahama had the opportunity to lead the party in the 2016 election after serving for four years with all the evidence of development projects in place that pushed Ghana forward in the comity of nations, but he lost the 2016 election.

    Why the loss?

Alhaji Dicko said the loss had since become “a big blow to the NDC as a political party” and almost every party member — from the first to the last person — has asked why the loss”.

He said some NDC members began to allege that Mahama failed to win the 2016 election because he was misled by his team of administrators while others attributed the loss to an alleged mistake by the party hierarchy, the national executive.

    Report findings not communicated

Alhaji Dicko expressed worry that findings of the Kwesi Botchwey Committee report had not been communicated to party members even if they would not be made public.

He mentioned that most party members and sympathisers were calling on Mahama to stand again as Presidential Candidate of the NDC and re-contest the 2020 election as a presidential candidate.

However, he said, if the findings of the report would not be communicated to party members for relevant issues to be addressed, calling for Mahama to lead the party would be inappropriate.

He was of the belief that going back to the grass roots to explain the real issues to the people and winning back their confidence was more important than preparing towards Election 2020.

This, he said, if not taken into consideration, could make Mahama fail for the second time as presidential candidate for the NDC party in 2020.

    Unity Walk & Recommendation

Alhaji Dicko recommended that it was time for the NDC to place premium on the report of the Kwesi Botchwey Committee to enable them to prepare adequately towards Election 2020.

He said a senior member of the NDC in the Ashanti Region and former Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Mr Kojo Bonsu, organised the recent Unity Walk which took place in Tamale, knowing very well the issues in the NDC in the Ashanti Region and added that he should have been interested in solving those issues before thinking of any national issue.

He said pulling the crowd to the street and other public places was not an assurance of addressing grievances of party members and winning an election.

He recalled that in the last days to the 2016 elections, the NDC held a rally at the Accra Sports Stadium, the venue was filled to the rafters and there were a lot more outside the stadium yet in the end, the NDC lost.

“These are times to rethink the reasons that culminated in the defeat of Mahama and the NDC in the 2016 elections. As a party, we need to learn lessons from the Kwesi Botchwey Committee report before we even think of Unity Walk and other national issues,” he concluded.

  • Mahama attacks NPP’s unacceptable dismissal of workers

Former President John Dramani Mahama appears to be brooding in his absence in government following what appears to be mass dismissal of persons employed under his government.

The current administration has sacked and forced out some key government appointees and laid off some workers it said the Mahama-led administration employed without following due process.

But the former president had to defend the integrity of his administration lambasting the New Patriotic Party government of indulging in “unacceptable” dismissal of workers.

“Bad precedents for our governance. Mass sacking of workers by the NPP govt unacceptable. #OneGhana #OnePeople”, Mr. Mahama tweeted Friday evening.

The tweet however did not say exactly which groups of people have been laid off by the government.

Whether employed by his government or whichever government, each citizens deserves a right to be employed, he indicated in another which followed the first one, minutes later.

“These workers are all citizens and like all Ghanaians have rights, which must be protected. #OneGhana #OnePeople”, he said.

  • Election 2016: NDC will win 13 seats in Ashanti – Mahama

President John Mahama has declared the governing National Democratic Congress “will do everything to win” parliamentary seats in 13 constituencies in the Ashanti region.

According to Mr. Mahama, his declaration is based on opinion polls conducted by the party in the region.

Mahama believes voters in the Ashanti region will reward the NDC at the polls given the amount of developments the administration has sent to the region. The Ashanti region is regarded as the stronghold of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

However, addressing a durbar at Apagya in the New Edubiase constituency on the first day of his tour of the Ashanti region, President Mahama said the 1 million votes target of the NDC will materialise.

“Someone will say Ashanti region is the stronghold of the NPP, but at this stage of our politics, voters in Ashanti will vote based on performance. I believe the amount of work we’ve done will reflect in the votes in the Ashanti region,” the NDC flagbearer stated.

He added: “This is why we are targeting 1 million votes here. 1 million votes, we will get here in Ashanti region.”

Mahama declared: “As I speak, we have four constituencies in Ashanti region. We have done opinion polls and surveys. I can tell you that we can get nine more constituencies in addition. So this year, we are targeting 13 constituencies in Ashanti. By God’s grace we will do everything to win these constituencies.”

Mahama believes the Presidential election is already in the bag for the NDC. He, however, tasked supporters to ensure the party widens the gap with the NPP to avoid any litigation at the courts.

    He predicted between 54-57%.

“As for the Presidential, we are done. We’ve already won by the grace of God,” Mahama, who is seeking a second term in office, said.

  • Mahama: Akufo-Addo slept while campaigning in Western Region

The NPP flagbearer while in the region disparaged the Mahama-led administration of doing little in terms of road construction in the region.

However, president Mahama wasted no time in responding to Akufo-Addo, accusing him of sleeping during his five days in the region, as he begins campaigning in the Western Region.

Speaking in Fante and Twi at separate rallies at Axim, Abura and Agona Nkwanta, president Mahama said during the 2012 election campaign, he realised that roads in the Western Region were nothing to write home about.

He continued: “I promised that we will invest monies into cocoa roads. So if you realise, the majority of roads we are doing are all in the western region.

“They said someone came here recently and said he did not see any  [good] road. He was probably sleeping.”

The president described his achievement in the last four years as unprecedented in the country, beseeching voters to renew his mandate.

He also called on voters to ignore politicians who spread lies about him and his government.
